Book on Cedartown history complete. Looking for vending sites.

The book about the history of Cedartown football is complete and in the hands of The History Press. The contract called for 43,000 - 48,000 words. I turned in a manuscript containing 56,000 words and could have written over 60,000. The editor agreed that there wasn't anything to trim. The proceeds of the book are going to benefit Cedartown High athletics. The publisher has made a very generous offer to the Bulldog Club that will let them keep one half of the book price. Any royalties I receive will be signed over to the club. I am currently listing all possible venues that would be interested in carrying the book. It will be released in Augusta. It has over thirty old photographs and is a year by year chronology of all of the Bulldogs' seasons that I could document. It also has some quotes from former players and coaches as well quotes from articles as they appeared in old newspapers. I would like to thank GHSFHA for being a constant source for schedules, game scores, weekly polls, All State players, and moral support. This website was one of my most valuable tools. It saved me a lot of time and helped me stay on course as I traveled through about one hundred years of football. Thank you very much! Your contribution to this book will be noted in the publication.

The Pitts High Pipe Dream

I was a bit surprised when I came across this headline in the Sept 11, 1952 edition of The Abbeville Chronicle (later known as The Wilcox County Chronicle):

Football Team Started At Pitts
Carter Is Coach

This has to be tease of some sort, I thought. Midget football or something.

Then I read further.

Quote

Pitts High School, who for years has placed a whing ding basketball team on the court, is about to enter a new athletic field - football. A good start was made when they secured the services of a former football star as well as a star on the court.

The new coach is Rufus E. Carter and he hails from Sweetwater, Tenn. He was an all-round athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball at London High, Hiwassee Junior College, and Maryville College in Tenn. He also played football during his tour of duty in the Armed Forces.

...

Coach Carter began his duties last week at Pitts as athletic director. He is teaching the fundamentals of football and by next year should produce some winning teams.

Pitts High? Pitts High?

The possibility of football in Pitts was quite surprising.

There is but a single high school these days in Wilcox County, one that is Class A. Granted, our classifications have only increased in school size and back then we had Class C, but Wilcox was divided very differently in 1952.

Wilcox County didn't have just one high school. It didn't just have two. No, Wilcox County had six high schools open in 1952:

Abbeville (white)
Abbeville (black)
Excelsior (Rochelle, black)
Pineview (white)
Pitts (white)
Rochelle (white)

If combining all of these only gets you a Class A now, just how small was Pitts?

Tiny.

While the town would retain a high school until 1963, it had lost its accreditation a few years earlier under a rule the state applied to small public high schools. You had to have an average daily attendance over 100 and Pitts couldn't do that. It might have been slightly larger in 1952 - the paper made mention that students were drifting to the schools in Abbeville and Rochelle - the numbers still would have been small.

We know from our scores that Pitts never played a varsity game.

Other than brief flirtation from Abbeville in the 1920s, the game would remain unknown in the county until 1956, when Wilcox Central suited up. Wilcox Central was initially supposed to consolidate Pineview and Pitts with Rochelle, but apparently didn't happen and Rochelle merely changed their name.

How far Pitts actually went towards having a team is unknown, as there wasn't a follow-up. But for at least a brief period of time, it had some dreams.

In 1985 when I was a sophomore at Early County High School I put together a 56-page book that covered BlakelyHigh/Early County High football from 1921-1985. It has scores, records, stories, etc. from that period. I think it might provide some useful information for this site and I wanted to share it if anyone is interested. Just not sure what to do with it.

Russell – 28. Gainesville – 0.
Russell – 7, Athens – 7.
Russell – 26, Newnan – 2.
Russell – 33, Fulton – 0.
Web site shows Russell lost to Commercial.

1941 Season - you show a game with Newnan at end of season - it not in yearbook.

Unfortunetly, the yearbooks do not show the dates games played. Also, it does not show if other teams were from a Jr. High, or if it was the other schools' "B" team.

New Commerce score

Just added one new Commerce score to the database.

On October 3, 1921, Gibson-Mercer defeated CHS 24-0. The score doesn't show up until the October 25th Elberton Star, but it's doubtful a more reliable report will show up.

We also have an unfortunate situation in 1922. Elberton was scheduled to play Commerce on October 6, but the score wasn't reported. Based on season records, EHS likely won, but they could be unpredictable at times.

Washington-Wilkes football history gone to press

Finally, I have submitted From Terrors to Tigers: the History of Wilkes County Football to the printers today. It will still be a few months before it will be available for sale, but I'll gladly reserve copies for anyone who is interested. Price will be $25 plus $5 for shipping, laminated soft cover (8 1/2 x 11) . It will be almost 350 pages with a large number of photos dating back to 1922 and before. It covers old Washington High (Terrors, Bearcats, Tigers), Washington Central Wildcats, Wilkes Academy Raiders, as well as the Washington-Wilkes Tigers. There are vast numbers of statistics for the team and opponents in addition to narrative chapters recounting games, players, and just about everything else.
It has been a fun ride pulling all this together. It would not have been possible to have such a complete work without all the help and encouragement from those here on GHSFHA: a real tip of the cap to all of you! I sure can't say that this book is a template for other high school football histories but maybe it will help others doing such projects to learn from what I got right and what I screwed up...

Some I have to track back (researched long ago)to find some dates, but here are missing games and scores(Bainbridge HS score first). Those with dates are taken from articles found in the Bainbridge Post Searchlight archives.
TBPS for many years would print only once a week to be viewed on Thursdays. A few dates were actually deduced from the articles, stating they had played the previous Friday or Saturday.

A bunch of Sylvania stuff was sent in and we have that updated. There were two score discrepancies and since I have no box scores, the original that I had was left in and it was noted there was a difference.

I think our GIA forum has been closed off or I'd make a note of it there instead, but Jefferson County High & Elementary's scores have been split. In 1958 or 1959 (I'm currently going with 1958), the GIA school known as Jefferson County High opened as the only black high school in Jefferson County. Previously, there had been three: Carver (Wadley), Wrens Colored and Jefferson County Training. The latter was in Louisville and used the nickname of Dragons.
