Just wondering about 1940 (or so)-1947

I was just wondering if you were going to post anything back before 1948 anytime soon. Just curious, seems it went from 1970 to 1962 to 50 something pretty quick then we hit 1948 and it stalled out. What can I do to help put it back to 1940 or so. It seems like 1940 is the year that HS football in Georgia really started to get organized. Just tell me wht you need and I will do what I can to help get it..

School name confusion

Beginning in the 1930s, the Georgia Department of Education began making an attempt to get a list of all of the white public schools that were in the state. The first few lists weren't comprehensive. By the mid-1940s, they had it figured out. They wouldn't make a major attempt at a listing of black schools until 1956 and wouldn't have a comprehensive one until 1957.

The list I'm posting is from 1945-46, with the another tab listing accredited black schools. That's as much as was printed then, the list including school deficiencies listed by numbers, such as insufficient building and equipment. That was quite rampant across the state. Clinch County built a new Homerville High & Elementary in 1953-54. While they said the building was in terrible shape (shockingly, it's still standing), they admitted the driving force behind seeking state funds to get the money was because while it was separate, it certainly wasn't equal and that might cause a push for integration (note: this is pre-Brown v. Board of Education). Twin City High, which is listed, was cited as having an insufficient building. This was 1945. They got a new school in 1959 or 1960, probably partially because of a local newspaper article on conditions at the black schools.

That rambling aside, this list has school name confusion. Look at Dooly County, for example. We know Vienna and Unadilla didn't combine high schools until the early 1980s. Yet, the school at Byromville called itself Dooly County. Kibbee, a spot off the beaten path in Montgomery County, calls itself Montgomery County. Mount Vernon-Ailey's public school is intertwined with the private college, Brewton-Parker.

Some of the principals are missing off the list. The way I had to copy the pages, some of them were cut off or otherwise unreadable. Eventually, I'll go back and fill those in. UGA has a ton of these directories and they offer an interesting look at how public schools changed. Probably about 400 rural white schools closed between 1945 and 1954.

State-accredited four-year high schools are in capital letters. A '*' means it's a standard elementary and a '+' means it's on the Southern List of Accredited High Schools.

Dr. Walter G. Watson

After coaching BHS in 1937 and 1938 Dr. Walter G. Watson left Bainbridge and went into medicine. He is currently a well known and loved doctor in Augusta where amazingly he is still practicing medicine at 100 years old.
Katie Couric did a piece on him recently and he estimates he has delivered 12-15,000 babies in his lifetime.

Hope everyone's been doing OK.

I've been working on other projects and am currently in the middle of fixing up this year's basketball state tournament.

Mainly, I've been going around and finding former segregated schools. I even made a trip to Thomson, but my photos of R.L. Norris are terrible as I didn't want to spend any more time fighting the road construction and just aimed the camera out my window.

At this moment, I've visited 48 counties and have taken pictures of about 75 schools.

For the curious, here they are.

I've been able to locate the vast majority of former high schools, but if anyone knows where the following were, I'm curious. (Well knows where they are beyond the city).

1963/64 Cairo Corrections

As a member of the Syrupmaker team I noticed some errors that needed to be corrected.

The 1963 Region Championship was played against Jesup on Friday Nov. 22 1963 instead of Saturday Nov. 23 1963. This was the day John Kennedy was assignated but the game went on.

In 1964 on Oct. 1 1964 we played Thomas County Central instead of Cartersville. I also noticed this game in which we played Central was not listed in Central's 1964 Schedule. The score was correct as we played to a 14-14 tie.

Elberton vs Ellijay 1949

Hey guys, I found a correction that I believe is worth noting. I was looking back over some old Gilmer/Ellijay info and found a few old articles - well copies anyway - about the Bobcats' storied squad of 1949. The correct score in Ellijay's 10/28 game is 21-7, rather than 21-0. However, I do not have the header to the issue in which the article was written. It isn't a Time-Courier (Ellijay) article so I'm guessing it came out of Atlanta. The quote that credits Elbert with a TD reads:

Just a little background, I began posting on this site back in '06 as "gocats." You'll see that I wrangled some info back then, and I'm just trying to do the same now. Also, I always like to pass along how the Ellijay/Gilmer name change came about. Maybe just a piece of info to tuck away...

Monroe-Monroe Area

I was trying to narrow the time line for Monroe and Monroe Area name change. I started looking through the GHSA Constitutions and Results from their archives and the 1965-1966 edition has them listed as Monroe and the 1966-1967 edition has them listed as Monroe Area, can someone tell me if this is official or if they just got around to changing the name then. I was thinking for some reason it changed in the mid to late 50's. Can someone help me out with this info PLEASE?
