Game summary
Regulation ended in a 3-3 tie. The North’s David Painter of Dalton kicked a 37-yard field goal with 0:10 remaining before half. Jackson’s Wally Cawthon kicked a 31-yard field goal on the last play of the fourth quarter. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced over. Bob Berry threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Willie Gault on a razzle-dazzle flea-flicker play with two minutes left in the first overtime period. Berry handed off the Melvin Dorsey who threw back to Berry. Berry then hit Gault who was 25 yards behind the defense. North coach Dewey Alverson said, “We never practiced that play. We just talked about it, and luckily for us itd worked.” Cawthon missed two chip-shot field goals in the fourth before making his tying kick at the horn. Doug Parrish of Americus was the Offensive MVP. He had 11 receptions for 99 yards. David Painter of Dalton had three interceptions and a fumble recovery to earn defensive honors.
