Brooks was an African-American school in Quitman.
History
Brooks was part of Quitman's city school system, which was separate at that time from Brooks County.
By the late 1940s, Brooks was badly overcrowded,[1] but outside of a two-room addition and a new library, little was done to remedy the situation the State Board of Education approved a $284,922 bond in 1952.[2] By that time, however, the situation was more dire as the elementary school at Brooks had burned in 1951.[2]
The situation stayed dire, as land for the school was not bought until 1954, when a plot was purchased on Washington Street.[3] Construction began later that year and finished in June 1955, in time for the 1955-56 school year.[4]
The new school was given the name Washington Street, but would remain as solely a city high school until the city-county school systems merged in 1959.
Football
Brooks was an early Georgia Interscholastic Association powerhouse, winning Class A state titles in 1949, 1951 and 1952.
